Dear Participants
It is an honour and a great pleasure to welcome you to Paris, on behalf of the Board and of all the members of the Société Européenne de Neurologie Pédiatrique. As you know, the SENP is one of the pioneering paediatric neurology societies since its foundation in Paris in 1970. Its main goals are to disseminate knowledge through meetings and to create networks dedicated to specific themes of child neurology. Even though SENP members meet every year at a local, national or also on an international level, the Congress, convened on a 4-yearly basis, is the major educational and scientific event, permitting a wider diffusion of progresses in the various domains of Child Neurology. It is also an opportunity for members and other colleagues to meet personally, exchange experience and discuss cases.
The major theme of the Congress covers issues related to the neurological manifestations of systemic disorders. Other major topics are movement disorders, epilepsy and a review of neonatal neurology and neuroprotection. Colleagues working in various fields of adult neurology have been asked to contribute, thus showing that child neurologists are conscious of the complementarity of scientific advances in the clinical and basic neurosciences and eager to apply the most recent knowledge to their specific domain of pediatric neurology.
This year, the Congress will include an international workshop on Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood, a fascinating disorder both mysterious and devastating. Hopefully, this gathering of experts will throw some light on the causes and possible treatments of this disorder.
Poster sessions complete the programme and all participants will be given the opportunity to directly discuss with the authors. Finally, the banquet will remind us that children have not only diseases but also talents.
Organizing a Congress of this importance is a major effort and one that demands many contributions. I thus take the opportunity to thank the many persons who actively worked to make this congress possible. The Scientific and Organizing Committee was of constant advice and helped to built-up a groundbreaking scientific program. Industry partners strongly supported this meeting by funding the exhibition. Most of them also provided educational grants to fund scientific sessions.
Special thanks are due to my secretary, Miss Brigitte Tricot, who dealed, with her usual devotion, with all practical aspects. The partners of the “Production Privée” group faced all logistical matters, including reduced funds. They also created the banquet programme that I am sure you will all enjoy. Lionel Draon, who gave his time and talent freely to create and “masterly” follow our web site. Dominique Poncelin, and all the members of the Alternating Hemiplegia association, for their support. Jean Aicardi, Philippe Evrard, Pierre Gressens, Hélène Ogier and Philippe Sachs for their advice and for dealing with some of my hospital duties when I was occupied with more “matterialistic” matters. Cesar Viguera, Editor of the Revista de Neurologia and Gilles Cahn, Director of the John Libbey editions and their colleagues, for the publication of the abstracts book and the programme.
Last, but not least, on behalf of the SENP Board, I would like to thank all invited speakers and those who submitted valuable communication proposals.
I hope that you will enjoy the congress.
Alexis Arzimanoglou SENP Secretary Chairman VIIth SENP Congress
